Review: Fright Night (1985)

Review: Fright Night (1985)
by Eli Henry

Tom Holland's 80's vampire masterpiece is my second favorite vampire movie (only second to 1987's 'Near Dark'... which I'll hopefully review in the future). Keep that in mind.

So: Charlie Brewster's new neighbor is a bit strange... he only comes out at night, and the town's citizens have been disappearing. Soon, Charlie's convinced that his new neighbor is a murderous vampire.

That's the set-up for 'Fright Night', a loveletter to classic vampire flicks, which ironically has become one itself, albeit a cult-classic. Fright Night's teen characters are portrayed faithfully, and Chris Saradon's Mr.Dandridge (the vampiric neighbor) is fantastic. However, despite the enticing characters of Mr.Dandridge, Charlie, "Evil" Ed (Charlie's best friend), and Charlie's girlfriend, the best character by far is Peter Vincent, "vampire-killer" television horror personality. He is a greatly sympathetic character, as well as one of the funniest.

The entire movie is full of vampire-movie cliches, and hilariously ridiculous moments, such as Mr.Dandridge's reaction to being stabbed in the hand with a pencil, along as some seriously emotional scenes, particularly in the climax.

If you enjoy vampire movies, and didn't like the recent remake of 'Fright Night', you will like this movie.

I give it: 9/10 and it is definitely a CLASSIC.
