Review: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Review: Rocky Horror Picture Show
by Eli Henry

Dammit, Janet! This is going to be a fun review. 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' is the best Frankenstein parody/homage (sorry, 'Young Frankenstein'), and by far the best musical ever created, and I've had the fortune of parents who own the film, and also enjoy it. This is stuff fresh off my mind, I watched RHPS just two nights ago for the second time. Here goes.

Words cannot describe the awesome madness this movie captures. From the opening titles (just a pair of lips singing, as seen above), you know what this movie is going to be. I'm going to get this out of the way now: my three favorite songs from RHPS are "Dammit Janet", "Hot Patootie", and "Eddie".

Most people's two favorite songs arrive almost at the same moment, when Janet and Brad's arrival at the castle coincides with the Annual Transylvanian Convention, and 'Time Warp' begins almost as soon as they enter the castle. Not even three minutes later, Doctor Frank-N-Furter enters the film via an electrically-charged rendition of 'Sweet Transvestite', then invites Janet and Brad up to his lab to "See whats on the slab", which is soon revealed to be a blonde, muscular version of Frankenstein's Monster, named Rocky. It soon becomes apparent that Frank isn't completely sane, after a rendition (by Meatloaf, of all people) of the classic-rock-styled "Hot Patootie".

Now, to be completely honest, I believe the movie is best until Frank-N-Furter (essentially a murderous, transvestite, bisexual Doctor Frankenstein) freezes Janet, Brad, Dr.Scott, and Columbia with his Medusa Transducer. Afterwards, I think it dips a bit in quality, but I would still call it good.

The movie's strange themes continue (and grow) until the last minute, when Brad, Janet, and Dr.Scott's fates are left in question.

  9/10
